Nirvana – Before Nirvana… Fecal Matter The 1985 Kurt Cobain Hometape

Posted: June 26, 2015 in Vinyl

Ah, the infamous Nirvana/Kurt Cobain/Fecal Matter demo tape. It’s one of the holy grails of Nirvana recordings, a legit tape that is. Since cassettes are so easy to duplicate, and the Fecal Matter demo tape was homemade, there are far more bootlegs of the cassette than real ones. There probably weren’t many real ones made to begin with, and an actual number made will never be known. When Kurt Cobain passed these things around he had no idea nor care that it would be highly sought after, historic, and/or valuable in the future.

First a little history of everything relating to this LP bootleg. Fecal Matter was a short lived band and the precursor to Nirvana. Fecal Matter was primarily Kurt Cobain and Dale Crover of The Melvins. Later on other members of The Melvins joined including Buzz Osborne and Mike Dillard. Fecal Matter only had one known recording, a demo tape that was never officially released, which was called Illiteracy Will Prevail. Fecal Matter last as a band for a little over a year, if that, before breaking up. After Fecal Matters’ demise Cobain passed around the Illiteracy Will Prevail tape, where it fell into the hands of Krist Novoselic. After listening to the tape Novoselic joined up with Cobain to form what would later become Nirvana.

This demo tape went largely unheard outside of Cobain circle of friends, acquaintances and peers. It took until 2006 for songs from the tape to make their way onto the internet, with more appearing online the following year, which were confirmed legit by those who have heard the tape.

This bootleg is one of the few physical formats available of the demo tape. However, sound quality is not that good. It could be worse, but it could be a lot better. But what can you expect when something is sourced from low quality MP3’s, which were themselves sourced from a cassette tape.
