The single for Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” has many different pressings from many different countries. What is pictured below is the standard U.S. 7″ pressing, the only standard pressing. There is also a promo U.S. 7″ pressing. The standard U.S. 7″ pressing comes in a stock MCA Records rainbow die cut sleeve and has stock MCA labels. The promo pressing has plain white center labels with the artist and title printed in black ink. The b-side for the standard U.S. pressing is “The Apartment Song” while the promo pressing has the single pressed on both sides.
Along with the U.S. pressings there is a UK, German, French, Spanish, Canadian, Australian and Japanese pressing.
There are two UK and German pressings, a 7″ and 12″ pressing of each. All these pressings coming in the same picture sleeve. The cover art is done in black and white with Tom Petty sitting on a stool. The b-side for the 7″ is only “The Apartment Song,” and the 12″ has (in order) “Don’t Treat Me Like A Stranger” along with “The Apartment Song” on the b-side.
There is also a limited edition variant of the UK 7″ pressing, which comes in a special sleeve that the regular sleeve (black and white Tom Petty on a stool picture sleeve) slides into. This special sleeve is exclusive to said variant, and has a picture of a top hat on the cover. This sleeve is also done envelope style; it has a flap on the back like an envelope does. The limited edition variant also comes with exclusive post cards, four in total.
The Japanese, Canadian and Australian pressings are all a 7″ that comes in the same picture sleeve and has the same track listing as the UK and German pressings. The Japanese pressing has Japanese writing on the cover though, so there is a minor difference. The Spanish pressing has an exclusive picture sleeve, which has green polka dots on a blue background on the cover. It has the single pressed on both sides.
The track listing between the U.S. and UK 7″ is different. The U.S. pressing has “Love Is A Long Road” on the b-side while the UK pressing has “A Mind With A Heart Of Its Own” on the b-side. The track listing for the 12″ has “A Mind With A Heart Of Its Own” on the b-side along with a live version of “Free Fallin’.”
