This is an odd single. It’s technically a promo but is not classified as such and has no denotations anywhere on the single (jacket or center label) that it is a promo. It’s a UK 12″ single promoting the Born In The U.S.A. album, but has the cover art from the “I’m On Fire” singles that you can see and read about here. The single’s official title is “Born In The U.S.A. 12″ featuring I’m On Fire.” Some sites have the title stupidly listed as “I’m On Fire / Born In The U.S.A.,” which is wrong and is not mentioned anywhere on the jacket or center label. The only way you’d find it on such sites is by searching the catalog number, which is TA 6342. These sites lump in this single under that title because there are other singles that have “I’m On Fire” on the a-side with “Born In The U.S.A.” on the b-side. To me, simply sharing the same track listing is not enough in common to lump in a release amongst other releases. This single should have its own release page.
The track listing for the pressing featured here, the UK 12 is as follows; A1 is “I’m On Fire,” A2 is “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” B1 is Born In The U.S.A. (The Freedom Mix) and B2 is “Johnny Bye Bye.”
Even though this is an oddball single it doesn’t escape the multiple pressings that 99% of all singles of this era receive. There is a UK shaped 7″ picture disc that has “I’m On Fire” on the a-side with “Born In The U.S.A.” on the b-side. It’s catalog number is WA 6342. The single is in the shape of a flag, but also the shape of a traditional record in the center. So there are a bunch of wavy line on the ends but once it gets towards the center there is nice straight lines. The picture disc image (a-side) is the American flag with an image of Springsteen playing his guitar in the center of the disc. The b-side image is only the red and white stripes from the flag with the track listing and credits printed.
Just like the 12″ pressing that is titled “Born In The U.S.A. 12″ featuring I’m On Fire,” there is a 7″ pressing with the same title, only swapping out 12″ for 7″. It only has two tracks; “I’m On Fire” on the a-side and “Born In The U.S.A.” on the b-side. The 7″ version is also a UK pressing. At one time the record label ran a contest with the 7″ pressing of this single, randomly giving away 100 pairs of concert tickets. Some copies of 7″ pressing come with a white hype sticker promoting the concert ticket give away.
