One of Springsteen’s most popular and widely recognized songs, “Born In The U.S.A.” received many different pressings as a single. There are 24 pressings in total; 11 – 12″ pressings and 13 – 7″ pressings. What is featured below is the regular U.S. 7″ pressing. There is also a promo 7″ pressing that comes in the same picture sleeve but has the single pressed on both sides. The catalog number is the same for the two U.S. 7″ pressings, so the track listing is the easiest and quickest way to tell them apart if ‘promo’ is not written on the promo copy. On top of the two 7″ pressings, there are also three 12″ U.S. pressings as well.
It’s very easy to tell the12″ U.S. pressings apart. One uses the Born In The U.S.A album art only with a major difference; on the single Springsteen’s shirt is orange instead of white and the hat is purple instead of red. The track listing on this pressing is great compared to all other 12″ pressings, not just the U.S. ones. B2 track is “Shut Out The Light,” B2 track is “Pink Cadillac,” B3 track is “Jersey Girl” and B4 track is “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.” The lead track is obviously the single. Along with this U.S. pressing there is also a Dutch pressing exactly the same, save for different catalog numbers.
The second U.S. 12″ pressing has the same cover art as the U.S. 7″ pressings, obviously only scaled up. This pressing has multiple versions of the single. Track B1 is the dub version and track B2 is the radio version of “Born In The U.S.A..” There is also a Dutch, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese (with Japanese text hype sticker) and Canadian 12″ pressing identical to this U.S. 12″ pressing. Lastly, there is a promo 12″ pressing that comes in a plain white jacket and has the single pressed on both sides.
There is an Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, Spanish, Japanese (Japanese text in some places on cover) and general European 7″ pressing that is identical to the regular U.S. 7″ pressing. There is also a South African 7″ pressing that comes in a stock Columbia Records paper sleeve. An odd country to not only get a pressing, but have it feature multiple exclusive, Bolivia, has a 7″ pressing. It has exclusive cover art, utilizing the Born In The U.S.A. album art with an orange hat instead of a red hat being the only difference. It also has an exclusive track listing, with A2 track “Cover Me,” B1 track “Dancing In The Dark” and B4 track “No Surrender.” The lead track is obviously the single.
